OnePlus has just announced an Alpha version of the Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM for its popular smartphone, the One. The mention of Alpha means that it’s still under development and not quite at a level where it can be used as a daily driver. But on the bright side, this also tells us that a working and stable version of the ROM is not far away.
As you very well know, the OnePlus One was banned from selling in India because of the Cyanogen ROM it uses. The only way the company can sell devices in the region again is by launching the device with its very own ROM and without the Cyanogen branding on the handset.

The company has posted a video demonstrating the functioning and features of this new ROM. It seems like OnePlus is going with a fairly stock version of Lollipop with barely any changes to the UI. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as stock Android is loved and acclaimed universally. But since OnePlus is developing the ROM from scratch, it will be remiss if there were no exclusive features on board.
The Cyanogen ROM had a myriad of such features, which helped accessibility to a great extent. So we hope OnePlus has something similar to offer its fans with the new ROM. You can download and install the ROM on your OnePlus One right away if you know your way around custom ROMs and TWRP recoveries. Needless to say, your device will need to be rooted to access these features.
OnePlus warns that your data might be lost after flashing the update, so proceed with caution. It’s always wise to make a backup of the essentials before flashing a custom ROM to avoid any accidents.
